As winter approaches, many winter sports enthusiasts are likely already planning their skiing adventures. Compared to other sports, the risk of injury while skiing is undoubtedly higher. To prevent skiing injuries, skiers and snowboarders must not overlook factors such as preparation, equipment, and the skiing environment. In the event of an injury, a quick and appropriate response is also crucial to reduce the risk of complications.

Skiing injuries can arise from various causes. Many people may suffer from insufficient training and warm-up, as well as not being equipped with suitable skiing gear. Given that Hong Kong residents may ski relatively infrequently each year, their skills can become rusty, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Other contributing factors include environmental conditions, such as heavy snowfall, skiing beyond normal skiing paths, or skiing at night, which can also lead to accidents.

The knees, shoulders, elbows, and ankles are particularly vulnerable to injury. The knees, for instance, serve as support points during turns and can become injured if excessive force is applied, potentially leading to meniscus tears. Shoulders and elbows are more prone to sprains when falling, which may result in rotator cuff tears. Ankle injuries can involve Achilles tendon tears, which might require surgical repair later on.

If an injury occurs while skiing, it’s important to assess the situation. If movement is not possible, do not force it; seek assistance to get to a safe location for first aid. Many people worry about needing treatment abroad. This depends on several factors: if there is no open wound, immediate treatment may not be necessary, and one can stabilize the injury and discuss further treatment upon returning to Hong Kong. Conversely, if there is any open wound, one may require immediate treatment locally.

After returning to Hong Kong, injured individuals should consult their family doctor or an orthopedic specialist for injury assessment and follow-up treatment, subsequently arranging rehabilitation and training to regain physical ability as soon as possible. Skiing is a good activity for both body and mind, and it is essential to prepare equipment and undergo basic training before setting out to reduce the risk of accidents.
